Hotel 1898

Hotel 1898

Barcelona, Spain

Situated in the heart of Barcelona, the Hotel 1898 is a boutique property set in the former headquarters of the General Philippines Tobacco Company. Beautifully restored to all its colonial glory, the handsome building contains a majestic marble lobby that opens directly onto La Rambla and is less than five minutes’ walk from the Plaça de Catalunya.

Drawing on its august heritage, the decor throughout the property is one of stately elegance. Expect dark wooden floors, rich red or candy-striped walls and furnishings reminiscent of a gentlemen’s club. The corridors throughout are lined with evocative images of the Philippines, while the common spaces feature details such as historic models of tobacco ships or navigation charts. The 169 rooms continue to draw on the colonial style and all feature stylish, modern bathrooms.

Beneath the hotel you’ll find an extensive spa area and indoor swimming pool, however, the stand-out feature of the hotel is the stylish rooftop cocktail bar and outdoor pool with panoramic views across the city. In the summer months it is also possible to enjoy your breakfast on the rooftop terrace.

OUR OPINION:

In addition to its sophisticated styling we find the service at the Hotel 1898 to be warm and friendly. The buffet breakfast is also one of the best we have come across.

As well as Wi-Fi, air conditioning, flat-screen TVs and minibars, all the rooms feature comfortable robes and slippers as well as a good range of bath amenities.

Location

The atmospheric lanes of the historic Gothic Quarter are just steps away, while the Plaça de Catalunya and L’Eixample with its Modernista architecture are within an easy five-minute walk.

Food and drink

An impressive breakfast buffet is served each morning in the main restaurant overlooking La Rambla. Guests can choose from a wide selection of artisan meats and cheeses, pastries, cakes, fresh fruit and smoothies, while eggs cooked to order, tea, coffee and cava are all served to the table. In the evenings, the restaurant offers a creative menu of Catalan dishes as well as tapas or you can choose something from the light menu of snacks served on the roof terrace. During the summer months it is also possible to enjoy breakfast on the rooftop terrace.

Facilities and activities

As well as the rooftop pool, the hotel also boasts a relaxing basement spa complete with treatment rooms and a second indoor pool. If you chose to stay in, the hotel regularly shows classic movies in the lobby in the evenings.
