Mary K Hotel

Mary K Hotel

Utrecht, The Netherlands

Located in a polished historical canal house, the Mary K Hotel offers an intimate stay and excellent service within a short walking distance of many of Utrecht’s highlights. From the ground floor up, the building dates back to the 18th century, but below ground dates back to the 16th century, when it was used at water-level as grain storage. That area has been transformed into the Studio XL Apartment, with retro decor that plays off the interesting shapes from the room’s past, such as stone arches and curved ceilings.

The communal spaces have a home-like feel to it, with bright-white walls, a mural of black-and-white teacups on the wall and string lights hanging across the ceiling, with patio doors letting in plenty of natural light. There is no restaurant, but the hotel offers pre-ordered breakfasts. The hotel staff will reach out to you beforehand to learn about your preferences, make food suggestions and confirm your breakfast orders before arrival.

The hotel is intimate, with just ten rooms. Each one is different from the next due to the shape of the building, and the original architecture is visible in details like ceiling beams and steep staircases.

OUR OPINION:

We like this hotel for its home-like, intimate feel and quiet location. The staff goes the extra mile to make your stay special, and their Studio XL Apartment is a one-of-a-kind bonus.

Rooms

The ten rooms are all individually shaped and styled, but follow a common theme of retro furniture such as leather armchairs, wicker chairs, sofas made from cushioned seats on wooden frames and plants for fresh pops of green. The rooms are divided between Small, Medium and Large rooms, though we don’t recommend the Small rooms, as they’re fairly tight quarters. The Medium rooms have either a balcony or a view over the canal, while the Large rooms all have canal views.

There is also the Studio Suite XL, which has a private waterside entrance, terrace seating, a Jacuzzi, washing machine and kitchenette.

All rooms have en suite bathrooms, Wi-Fi and air conditioning.

Location

The Mary K Hotel is located on a quiet, residential street on the canal-side of the main waterway through the city. It’s close to the city’s highlights, while still feeling away from the hustle and bustle of the main streets. The boat drop-off is a four-minute walk away. You're also within roughly ten minutes' walk of the main shopping district, Utrecht Centraal train station, the Domtoren and Saint Martin’s Cathedral.

Food and drink

  • Pre-ordered breakfast of your choice served in the dining room daily.
  • There's no restaurant, but the hotel is within walking distance of many restaurants and bars.

Families

  • A family room is available with interconnecting rooms.
  • Additional bed or crib available upon request.

Facilities and activities

  • Bike rental available.
  • Gym and sauna available through partnership with local business.
  • Garden.

Accessibility

There are many steps throughout the hotel and no elevator, so we don’t recommend this hotel for those with serious mobility difficulties.
