Hótel Flatey

Flatey, Iceland

Of the 3,000 islands and inlets on Breiðafjörður, the nature reserve and bay located between the Snæfellsnes Peninsula and the Westfjords in west Iceland, Flatey is the only one that’s inhabited. So it’s easy to see the appeal of this charming hotel comprised of restored timber warehouses from the days when the building was used to store goods brought in by sailing ships.

All of the 11 rooms have vintage style decor, mountain views, hardwood or parquet flooring, magazines from the early 1960s, and shared bathroom facilities. There’s also a restaurant offering a gourmet menu of lamb, seafood straight from the bay, and other speciality dishes. Elsewhere, you’re met with friendly staff who will help you make the most of the island’s attractions, including hiking, visiting the oldest library in Iceland, and heading to the coastline where Arctic terns make their nests.

OUR OPINION:

We love Hótel Flatey for its vintage style rooms, gourmet seafood, and gracious hospitality. The remote and tranquil location on Breiðafjörður Bay adds to its appeal.

Rooms

There’s 11 vintage style rooms housed in restored timber warehouses surrounding the old market square, including three suites, six doubles or twins, one single, and one large family room. As well as a decor style that has preserved the building’s historic and archaeological essence, there’s sea or mountain views, hardwood or parquet flooring, comfortable beds, and a selection of magazines dating from the early 1960s. Please note that bathroom facilities are shared with other guests.

Location

Located on Flatey, the only inhabited island of the 3,000 islets dotting Breiðafjörður Bay, the hotel is reached by the Baldur ferry from Stykkishólmur or Brjánslækur. The island measures 2 km long by 1 km wide and is home to just a handful of families. There are no shops, but the old village has a church, bar, and the smallest library in Iceland.

Food and drink

The hotel’s restaurant is popular with Icelanders who travel here from the mainland to sample the gourmet menu. Expect a varied selection of lamb, seafood straight from the bay, and other speciality dishes in addition to impressive views across the village, the coastline, and the nesting grounds of the Arctic terns in Skansmýri.Ìý
