H贸tel Flatey

Flatey, Iceland

Of the 3,000 islands and inlets on Brei冒afj枚r冒ur, the nature reserve and bay located between the Sn忙fellsnes Peninsula and the Westfjords in west Iceland, Flatey is the only one that鈥檚 inhabited. So it鈥檚 easy to see the appeal of this charming hotel comprised of restored timber warehouses from the days when the building was used to store goods brought in by sailing ships.

All of the 11 rooms have vintage style decor, mountain views, hardwood or parquet flooring, magazines from the early 1960s, and shared bathroom facilities. There鈥檚 also a restaurant offering a gourmet menu of lamb, seafood straight from the bay, and other speciality dishes. Elsewhere, you鈥檙e met with friendly staff who will help you make the most of the island鈥檚 attractions, including hiking, visiting the oldest library in Iceland, and heading to the coastline where Arctic terns make their nests.

OUR OPINION:

We love H贸tel Flatey for its vintage style rooms, gourmet seafood, and gracious hospitality. The remote and tranquil location on Brei冒afj枚r冒ur Bay adds to its appeal.

There鈥檚 11 vintage style rooms housed in restored timber warehouses surrounding the old market square, including three suites, six doubles or twins, one single, and one large family room. Location

Located on Flatey, the only inhabited island of the 3,000 islets dotting Brei冒afj枚r冒ur Bay, the hotel is reached by the Baldur ferry from Stykkish贸lmur or Brj谩nsl忙kur. The island measures 2 km long by 1 km wide and is home to just a handful of families. There are no shops, but the old village has a church, bar, and the smallest library in Iceland.

Food and drink

The hotel鈥檚 restaurant is popular with Icelanders who travel here from the mainland to sample the gourmet menu. Expect a varied selection of lamb, seafood straight from the bay, and other speciality dishes in addition to impressive views across the village, the coastline, and the nesting grounds of the Arctic terns in Skansm媒ri.听

Families

Children are welcome to stay at H贸tel Flatey and cots can be arranged on request. The hotel also has one large family room.
