Fundu Lagoon on Pemba Island

Fundu Lagoon

Pemba Island, Zanzibar Archipelago

Set in one of East Africa's most idyllic locations, Fundu Lagoon is situated on a long sandy beach with a wooden pier and jetty stretching over the water. The resort is owned by a London fashion designer; something that becomes apparent as soon as you arrive, with its unique style and bohemian atmosphere blending in well with the natural surroundings.

Wooden walkways and sandy paths link the safari-style bungalows to the main communal areas, which are thatched, spacious and airy, offering wonderful views over the ocean. Comfort and luxury is balanced with the lodge鈥檚 rustic atmosphere, with bleached wooden boards and strings of shells giving it the feel of a much-loved beach house.

OUR OPINION:

We think the lodge鈥檚 location is absolutely stunning, and it鈥檚 a lovely place to stay either for complete relaxation or to enjoy the activities on offer. Arriving by speedboat, you鈥檒l immediately feel a million miles from anywhere.

Excellent

Rooms

The tented bungalows are set under makuti thatched roofs on wooden decks, either on the beachfront or perched on the hillside. Stylish and spacious, they all offer ocean views, large double beds or twin beds, mosquito nets, ceiling fans, minibars and both indoor and outdoor seating areas. The en suite bathrooms have hot showers and flush toilets.

Suites are more spacious than the Standard rooms and offer private plunge pools and decks, situated by the beach or in the forest. Meanwhile, Superior Suites are all located on the beach and feature larger decks, plunge pools, queen sized beds, tea/coffee making facilities, stone bathrooms, an outdoor shower and a separate shady lounge/dining area with daybeds.

Location

The resort is situated on a stretch of sandy beach fringed by forest on the southwest coast of Pemba Island. Part of the Zanzibar Archipelago, the island lies north of Zanzibar and to the east of Kenya and Tanzania鈥檚 coastlines, making it an excellent place to relax after a safari. The resort is only accessible by boat and offers fantastic snorkelling and diving opportunities.

Food and drink

Meals are a fusion of Arabic, Indian, Swahili and colonial cuisines, reflecting Zanzibar鈥檚 cultural heritage. Picnics can be provided for day trips, and there鈥檚 a weekly beach barbecue and Swahili feast with live music. Drinks and snacks are served all day at the poolside bar, while the Jetty Bar is the place to go for sunset cocktails as you watch fishermen out on their dhows.

Families

Fundu Lagoon welcomes children aged 12 and over. Standard rooms and Suites can fit an additional single bed for an extra guest, while Superior Suites have space for two additional beds.

Honeymooners

A private candlelit dinner can be arranged for you to enjoy on the beach or on your private terrace for a romantic dining experience, with your own personal chef and waiter ensuring everything runs smoothly. The resort also allows you to set sail on a private dhow, providing you with champagne and canap茅s to enjoy at sunset.

Facilities and activities

The infinity pool is set on the hillside, offering superb views over the coast. Nearby is the Fusion Spa, which offers a variety of Asian and African-inspired treatments using local ingredients. Free Wi-Fi is available in the reception area. The resort also has its own PADI-certified dive centre, Dive 710, offering a range of courses for all experience levels and trips out to some of the best dive spots.
