At the end of the achingly beautiful Wrangell Narrows lies one of Alaska鈥檚 gems, the small town of Petersburg.

The Norwegian Peter Buschmann arrived here in 1897 and found a fine harbour, abundant fish and a ready supply of ice from the nearby LeConte Glacier. He built a cannery and enticed his Norwegian friends to follow him, thus establishing the town that bears his name.

Halibut fishing

This busy little fishing port has a distinct Norwegian influence today with pretty Norwegian rosemaling decorating the tidy homes. Currently it聽has the largest halibut fishing fleet in Alaska, and fish canning remains the dominant industry.

Icebergs

Just across Frederick Sound there is a spectacular glaciated wall of alpine peaks whilst the LeConte Glacier regularly launches new icebergs into the sea which is a wonderful sight to behold.
