The Bangweulu Wetlands, seasonally flooded grass plains around the swampy Lukulu River, support an incredible diversity of water birds.

Birdlife of Bangweulu Wetlands

The shoebill stork is a particular draw and there are also wattled crane, sacred ibis, spur winged goose and swamp flycatcher. Although a haven for birders, you will also find plentiful elephant, buffalo, reedbuck and massive herds of black lechwe.

Well off the beaten track and with accommodation choices that don't quite match the South Luangwa for luxury, Bangweulu is nevertheless a great destination for an authentic African experience.
