We've hand-selected a range of tours and stays across the world that go above and beyond to be a force for good by supporting local businesses, educating staff, challenging local norms, or promoting conservation and biodiversity efforts. Your Responsible Choice helps increase the positive impact of your trip.

One of the most remote inhabited islands in the Seychelles, Alphonse Island Lodge is located just 7° south of the Equator, offering a tropical climate and a wealth of unspoiled natural beauty. The island boasts miles of untouched shorelines, lagoons and sea flats with white sands, as well as dense natural forest dotted with coconut groves. Wildlife enthusiasts will find an abundance of bright birdlife and slowly ambling tortoises.

This island sanctuary is home to only a small number of carefully spaced bungalows, suites and villas each with their own impressive ocean views and sense of privacy. The main lodge features a beach bar and lounge, swimming pool, tennis courts, restaurant and spa — you can also take advantage of a wide range of activities.

All meals are included for guests and feature fresh produce straight from the island.

OUR OPINION:

We think this is a great resort for nature-lovers who are looking for an island getaway. And, with just 27 bungalows and suites and two villas, the island has an intimate, laid-back feel.

Location

One of the world’s most remote locations, Alphonse Island Lodge is 400 km (250 miles) southwest of the island of Mahé and can be reached via a scenic 60-minute light aircraft flight. One part of the Alphonse atoll, it’s one of the outer islands of the Seychelles archipelago, and that far-flung locale has helped to preserve its unblemished natural beauty. Guests can enjoy activities in the pristine waters, or explore the island itself.

Food and drink

The hotel offers casual dining inspired by international cuisine and Creole traditions at Bijoutier Restaurant and Le Lys Bar overlooking the sparkling pool and shoreline. You can also opt for in-villa dining, for that extra touch of romance. The chefs are masters of creativity, catering to your culinary desires to provide a diverse and personal dining experience throughout your stay. The menu includes organic ingredients from the island’s garden, daily fresh fish, and a carefully curated wine list.

Families

With a wealth of wildlife and miles of shoreline to explore, Alphonse is a natural playground. The staff are there to assist you and during school holidays, the Alphonse Tribe provides fully supervised activities to keep children entertained. A child-friendly buffet is laid out earlier in the evenings and babysitting is available at an extra cost.

Facilities and activities

In addition to the swimming pool in the main lodge, the calm oceans are there to tempt you with complimentary activities like kayaking, stand-up paddleboarding and snorkeling. You can also take advantage of tennis courts or go cycling. For an extra cost, you can try your hand at fishing or scuba diving, enjoy a relaxing sunset cruise or indulge in a treatment at the spa.

Environmental and social responsibility

Alphonse Island is extremely committed to the conservation work on the island with ongoing research, rehabilitation and monitoring programs continually developing. In 2007, the Island Conservation Centre was established and has since ensured that the key aspects of their ecosystem are protected. The Island Conservation Society (ICS) team offers activities upon the island such as turtle patrol, beach clean ups, giant tortoise viewing and feeding, and birdwatching, all of which guests are encouraged to join.

The Alphonse Conservation Foundation is funded by its members and by guest’s conservation levy. The team provide weekly presentations for guests in the island’s cinema room on important environmental topics.
