For those approaching from the west, Wilderness is where the Garden Route really starts.

The road is gradually squeezed between the lagoons and wooded slopes on one side and the towering sand dunes on the other.

Prolific birdlife

Love Birds at Birds of EdenHeld in place by a dusting of surprisingly durable vegetation, the dunes slope down onto a long beach, often empty and pounded by the ocean surf. Birdlife is particularly prolific in the area as well and includes the distinctive African black oystercatcher.

The town of Wilderness itself is quite built up and offers a wide array of accommodation, shops and places to eat.
