Pousada Convento de Tavira

Pousada Convento de Tavira

Algarve, Portugal

Hidden away in the historic Algarve town of Tavira, the Pousada Convento de Tavira offers an excellent base for exploring the quaint coastal town, visiting the nearby beaches and gaining a better understanding of the history and culture of the Algarve region. The Pousada dates back to the 16th century and was originally constructed as a convent. Today, it retains its traditional layout but has been adapted for modern tastes without sacrificing its historic charm.

Guests can stroll around the cloisters and relax in the privacy of the sun-drenched interior courtyard which feels completely insulated from the hustle and bustle of the city outside. There are just 36 guest rooms, each decorated in a comfortable, contemporary style in hues of burgundy, cream and mahogany. An inviting pool allows guests to cool off in hot weather while spa and massage services are also available. Dining options are offered at the restaurant which serves simple, local dishes.

With a convenient location in the heart of Tavira, shops, restaurants and local sightseeing are all within easy reach, while the wide sandy expanse of Tavira Island’s beaches are just a short walk and ferry ride away.

Rooms

Each of the 36 rooms in the property is decorated in a contemporary style which offers modern comforts while respecting the historic charm of the building. Deep red tones and warm saffron yellows complement the dark wood floors and traditional features. Fitting with the history of the building as a convent, rooms look onto the cloisters and the grassy internal courtyard, out over the town, or over the pool. Some suites can accommodate multiple extra beds, making them a good option for families visiting with children and all rooms have air-conditioning and complimentary Wi-Fi.

Location

Situated about 20 minutes along the coast from Faro, the Pousada Convento de Tavira occupies a convenient location in this historic town. Tavira boasts a rich heritage and a local, small-town charm which allows visitors to see the more local side of the Algarve. A ten-minute walk from the hotel is the ferry dock for Tavira Island, a short journey that will bring you to long stretches of sand for sunbathing and swimming.

Food and drink

The restaurant occupies what was once the convent's dining hall where a hearty buffet breakfast is served in the morning. Later in the day lunch and dinner focus on simple, local dishes with plenty of fresh seafood, citrus and Algarve specialities included on the menu. The sleek, modern bar serves a variety of drinks which can also be enjoyed by the pool or in the shade of the cloister.

Families

A shallow kids’ pool is situated next to the main pool.

Facilities and activities

An outdoor pool is situated behind the main building in a sunny, grassy area with sunloungers for enjoying the warm Algarve sunshine. Spa and massage services are also available.
