Casa San Blas

Casa San Blas

Cuzco, Peru

Casa San Blas has an intimate size and a locally run feel that makes for an inviting and friendly stay within Cuzco. Set back from the main street, the hotel has a welcoming look from the outside that carries on as you step into the reception areas.

Most of the rooms are located toward the back of the hotel, and all are decorated in a simple and clean style with decorative touches of local artwork and handicrafts. The small terrace leading to some of the rooms offers superb views over the city. The location, character and value for money of the hotel make it a firm favorite.

OUR OPINION:

A really quirky little hotel, with a very Peruvian atmosphere. The small terrace on the roof offers some of the best views of the city. The hotel can be a little noisy, but with a fantastic location in the heart of the city this is to be expected. All of Cuzco's main sites are easily accessed on foot, and San Blas itself is a wonderful place to explore and relax in during free time.

Rooms

The hotel offers four room categories. We love the Junior Suite, which is really great value for money. Located toward the top of the hotel, it has excellent city views from a terrace balcony and features a queen size bed as well as its own sitting area. We also recommend the Suite Apartments on the uppermost floor, which offer panoramic views of the city from the terrace balcony and come complete with a well-equipped kitchenette. Some also feature a mezzanine level for the bedroom, which may not be to everyone's taste, so if this is an issue do let your specialist know. Depending on their layout they either contain two double beds and a sofa bed or a queen size bed and sofa bed.

Overlooking the internal courtyard, Standard rooms can be a little dark as this 200 year old house is built into the side of the hill, but the single or double beds are over two meters long.

The highest category is the Senior Suite, which is more like a small apartment and is found at the front of the hotel, with a balcony overlooking the cobbled streets. It has a queen size bed and full size kitchen with dining area.

All rooms and suites feature rustic furniture, cable TV, complimentary Wi-Fi access and a hair dryer. There may be noise from guests getting up early or arriving late to the hotel, especially in the Standard rooms and the Senior Suite, so it's advisable to pack earplugs.

Location

A friendly place to stay in a convenient location (on a short but steep hill) close to many characterful shops and restaurants in San Blas, Cuzco's artistic district. There's a music school nearby that some clients have mentioned (noise 6.30am to 6pm), however, we feel this adds to the San Blas experience. The central square with its numerous attractions is only a short ten-minute walk away.

Food and drink

The hotel offers breakfast at the front of the property, which is a buffet style offering a mixture of breads and fruit, but is quite simple. Hot options such as scrambled eggs are offered, but service can be a little slow on these. While we do get the odd comment that the breakfast room is a little small, this only seems to be at particularly busy periods, and you do have the option to enjoy the tables outside the front of the hotel.
