Hanaya Ryokan, Tsumago

Hanaya Ryokan

Tsumago, Japan

Situated right by the Nakasendo Highway in O-Tsumago, a pleasant 20-minute walk away from Tsumago, the Hanaya is well established as a ryokan. The property has two distinct sections, the oldest part dating back to the Edo period (1603 - 1867) and is full of character. Sleeping quarters are usually in the newer section however, which does lack a bit of the charm of the original building (it includes a vending machine in reception).

Rooms are clean, if a little sparse, and have something of a hostel feel to them. Sleeping arrangements aside, we receive many good reports on the dinner served at the Hanaya, with seasonal homemade cuisine including freshwater fish from the surrounding rivers. After dinner you can relax in the shared hinoki wood bath.

Please note that the Hanaya is rather traditional in its operation, and as such, adheres to strict opening and meal times; however, the staff are obliging and courteous.
