Commissioned by a rich Chinese merchant, The Phoenix was originally used as a private residence, becoming a hotel in 1951. Today it retains its colonial charm, combining Asian and European styles, and its elegantly designed rooms offer a comfortable, sophisticated retreat from the streets of Yogyakarta.

Located in the popular Malioboro district, it's just a short walk away from the city's many cultural sites. Rooms

The rooms at The Phoenix Hotel provide comfort, charm and character with a mix of European and Asian design. All come with modern facilities, including unlimited Wi-Fi, a safe, TV, hair dryer and air conditioning, as well as en suite bathrooms with a shower, bathtub and toiletries.

There are four different categories, with Superior Heritage rooms offering the choice of a queen size bed or twin beds and the more spacious Deluxe Legacy rooms offering a king size bed or twin beds. Phoenix Executive rooms have a king size bed and a separate living room, as well as a coffee machine and a gift upon arrival. The most luxurious option is the Legacy Suite, which also has a separate living room but is more spacious. The maximum capacity in each room is three people (additional charges for extra person may apply). Some of the rooms can be connected to accommodate larger groups or families.

Location

The property is a short walk of around 15 to 20 minutes from the main street of Jalan Malioboro, which provides an array of shops and restaurants. It's also a short cab ride or 40-minute walk to the famous palace of Kraton Ngayogyakarta. Taxis can be ordered from your hotel reception. There are some lovely local and international restaurants found just opposite the hotel should you wish to dine elsewhere.

Food and drink

The one main restaurant, Paprika, is located next to the swimming pool in the open-air courtyard, serving a variety of international cuisine including Indonesian, Chinese and Western dishes. Make sure to try the hotel's signature dish, bakpia, which are round, sweet pastry rolls filled with beans or meat, known locally as the ‘Oleh Oleh’. There are also two bars, 1918’s Terrace Lounge, which is open all day, and Vino Bar for evening drinks. The breakfast buffet is served each morning from 6am in Paprika and room service can be ordered at any time of the day.

Families

Babies and children are welcome at The Phoenix, and babysitting can be arranged on request. Cribs are available and one additional bed can be ordered in each room at an additional cost.

Facilities and activities

A gym and a massage service are available for guest use on site in addition to the swimming pool. Guests can also play table tennis for an additional charge. Live piano music can be enjoyed each evening, providing a relaxing ambiance as you socialize over drinks. The hotel also offers a laundry, ironing and dry cleaning service, luggage storage and free parking.
