1898 The Post

1898 The Post

Ghent, Belgium

Housed in the upper floors of Ghent’s grand former post office, 1898 The Post is a warm and luxe hotel that’s loaded with comfort and style.

Built by architect Louis Cloquet in preparation for the 1913 World Exhibition, the post office building’s exterior reflects the Gothic and Renaissance influences of the nearby Saint Bavo’s Cathedral and Saint Michael’s Bridge, and its tall clock tower complements with the older spires of the city’s skyline. Inside, the building retains the original wrought-iron spiral staircase, while the decor uses rough wood textures, deep-green walls and vintage lighting and furnishings to create a turn-of-the-century effect.

The rooms are either single floor or duplex style, and are decorated in a dark palette with rough textures and accessories reminiscent of a 19th-century library or study. The bathrooms are marble with large walk-in showers.

A buffet breakfast is served daily in The Kitchen, while The Cobbler, a craft cocktail bar on the building’s top floor, offers tapas, drinks and panoramic views of the city over the Leie River.
