Hotel Schloss Fuschl

Schloss Fuschl Resort & Spa

Fuschl, Austria

Sprawled along the forested banks of a crystalline lake in Austria’s Salzkammergut region, Schloss Fuschl Resort & Spa is a country escape just a 25-minute drive from Salzburg. Dating from 1450, the castle’s medieval tower, peaked roofs and tidy windows exude storybook charm, while the state-of-the-art spa facilities provide modern luxury and comfort.

The lobby features high, white, antler-bedecked walls, arched windows, luxe leather furniture and natural wood beams, illuminated by rustic wrought-iron chandeliers and a pale stone fireplace. The hotel’s 110 rooms, suites and lake cottages are elegantly decorated with antiques covering a range of artistic periods from baroque to Biedermeier.

Most rooms offer a view of Lake Fuschl, also the focus for the site’s many outdoor activities. Swimming, boat trips and hiking provide a bracing counterpoint to the interior’s relaxing wellness facility. The property also boasts a golf course, an exclusive beach and vintage car rallies.

The restaurants offer varied lakeside dining experiences, from the freshly caught and smoked catch of the day at the onsite fishery, to the fusion of Austrian and French cuisine at the Schloss Restaurant.

OUR OPINION:

We love this hotel’s secluded location along the lake and its excellent facilities. The historic castle provides a romantic backdrop for a trip to Austria’s lake district, well known for its connections to The Sound of Music.

Rooms

The rooms and suites are spread across the main building and historic castle. Hand-selected antiques, including gilt-framed oil paintings, ornate draperies, intricate lamps and clocks and inlaid dressers adorn the rooms. Deep reds and golds complement burnished parquet floors and airy white walls.

The more modest Deluxe Rooms have carpet and tile flooring, spacious bathtubs and a courtyard view. The Grand Deluxe Rooms offer a partial lake view, as do the one-bedroom Junior Suites. The Castle Suites, inside the historic tower building, each demonstrate a different period in their furnishings. Two grand suites, the Kaiser Franz-Joseph Suite and the Mozart Presidential Suite, offer sprawling accommodations in opulent style.

Alongside the lake, you’ll find six private cottages complete with private sauna, fireplace and balcony.

Location

Hotel Schloss Fuschl is well-located in Austria’s lake district, a 25-minute drive from Salzburg. Situated on a peninsula on Lake Fuschl, the hotel is intimate yet accessible. Outdoor activities like swimming, boating, hiking and mountain biking are available at the property, and the other charms of Salzkammergut — the steep markets of Saint Wolfgang, the spa town of Bad Ischl and the salt-mining village of Hallstatt — are close at hand.

Food and drink

There are two dining options at the hotel. The Schloss Restaurant serves breakfast and dinner in a style that blends French and Austrian cuisine. The Schloss Fuschl Fishery offers the day’s catch from the lake, either smoked or as a delicate fish soup.

More options are a short walk or transfer up the hill to the sister hotel, Sheraton Fuschlsee-Saltzburg Hotel Jagdhof.

Facilities and activities

The onsite spa offers massage and skin treatments in soothing surroundings, and include access to the pool, whirlpool, steam room, and fitness equipment and classes. Outside, a private beach and secluded pier lead down to the lake for swimming amid the mountain landscape. The hotel can arrange some activities for you, including hiking, mountain biking, fly-fishing and kayaking, as well as visits to Schloss Ladl and the Sissi Museum, which houses a collection of fashion and furnishings from the reign of the Empress Elisabeth.
