Jongomero Camp, Tanzania

Jongomero Camp

Ruaha National Park, Tanzania

This camp has a luxurious yet authentic feel, and is an excellent option for those wanting to go on safari and stay somewhere with excellent food, service and a higher level of comfort. The main boma is situated under ancient riverine trees, offering uninterrupted views of the Jongomero River and bush beyond. Food is superb, featuring fresh mangoes, papayas, bread and Tanzanian coffee for breakfast, as well as light tasty lunches and three-course dinners at night.

After dinner, you can either retire to the comfy armchairs in the small bar or to the roaring campfire, where you can exchange safari tales. The hosts of the camp are passionate about the bush and will often come down to the bar to have a drink with you before dinner. A real advantage of staying here is that there are no other camps nearby, so you have the wildlife all to yourself.

OUR OPINION:

Jongomero is a superb camp that's ideal for those who want luxury in pristine wilderness. Far away from the other camps, you’ll enjoy superb game viewing without seeing another soul.

Excellent

Rooms

There are eight luxurious tents on raised platforms overlooking the sandy river bed. Situated beneath tall trees, they are cool inside and have lovely shady verandas on which you can relax and observe passing wildlife. The interiors are stylish, with polished wooden floors, carved dhow-wood beds and polished taps in the en suite bathrooms. Fluffy towels are provided for both the bathroom and swimming pool.

Location

The camp is located on the banks of the seasonal Jongomero River in the southwestern part of Ruaha National Park.

Food and drink

Dinners at Jongomero are mostly eaten in a special, private setting that differs each night. The food here is delicious, with three courses served in the evening. Breakfast at Jongomero includes a continental buffet, with the option of ordering hot food to be brought to your table.

Families

Children over the age of six are welcome at Jongomero, but only two children can be booked to stay at the camp at any time so it depends on availability.

Facilities and activities

There's a swimming pool in the camp's main area, which is great for cooling off in the heat of the day between game drives. Activities from Jongomero focus on half and full day game drives in open 4x4s. As Jongomero is located in a far corner of the park, you rarely see other vehicles. Jongomero also offers a walking safari, which leaves early in the morning and is an excellent opportunity to see some of the smaller things that you miss in the vehicle. A qualified guide and ranger will take you out on a walk down to the river, pointing out tracks, bones and trees. You'll also get to see lots of birdlife down by the river, as well as hippo and crocodiles. It's an excellent experience that shouldn't be missed when staying here.
