Ice dining under the northern lights

Get a more up-close-and-personal view of the frozen northern landscape with this chance to enjoy an intimate candlelit dinner on a remote frozen lake. Sheltered by a traditional S谩mi tent as you dine on local, seasonal ingredients, you鈥檒l have the rare chance to enjoy the windswept wilderness in a way few others ever have.

The adventure takes place deep in the heart of Lapland, far from any light pollution, noise or other people. You鈥檒l travel by snowmobile to a traditional S谩mi tent set up on the ice. There, lit by the wintry moon and surrounded by the warm glow of lanterns, you can look out for the northern lights dancing above you as you鈥檙e served a seasonal three-course dinner accompanied by a paired wine or local beer.

You鈥檒l begin your evening with a short snowmobile ride into the boreal forest that surrounds the town of Harads. This far north, you鈥檙e already deep into the wilderness, but the ride will let you get even further from people, so you can better experience the deep hush of near-solitude.

When you arrive at the lake, you鈥檒l find a conical tent set up on the ice. Known by the indigenous S谩mi as a l谩vvu, this tent is surrounded by lanterns and provides a warm place for you to enjoy your meal. Taking your seat on reindeer furs, you鈥檒l dine on a three-course meal. The ingredients are as local as possible and the menu changes by season depending on what鈥檚 available. Your meal will be accompanied by wine or a local beer.

As you spend several hours eating on the ice keep your eyes peeled for the northern lights, which are common in this region during the winter. Lapland is one of the best places to spot the aurora borealis, which appears 200 nights of the year here. This far from large populations, you can enjoy truly dark skies.
