Tsitsikamma Forest

Tsitsikamma Forest Trip

At the eastern end of the Garden Route, and easily accessible from any of the Garden Route destinations, is the Tsitsikamma Forest, a dense cloak of deep green that coats the mountains.

There are dramatic bridges that arch high above steep canyons, carrying rivers down to the ocean. The N2 toll road crosses one at the Storms River Bridge, whilst on the old road, at the dizzyingly dramatic Bloukrans Bridge, is the highest commercial bungee jump in the world.

The Tsitsikamma National Park plays host to the spectacular Storms River Mouth, where the Storms River emerges from towering cliffs to greet the sea. A suspension footbridge crosses the point where ocean and river meet, a surging maelstrom that excites and inspires.

Another possible stop is at Monkeyland, where rescued primates have been given a safe haven in the forest. Here knowledgeable rangers can teach you about the various beautiful monkeys, lemurs and the like that used to be in circuses and zoos, and are now once again free to roam through a large area of natural forest. The newest feature at Monkeyland is the Birds of Eden project, a vast dome enclosing two hectares of forest, home to a large collection of free-flight African birds. Unlike Monkeyland, no guide is needed and you are free to roam through the forest admiring the bright plumage of the birds around you.

Visit Tsitsikamma National Park, where with a guide, you will experience a sea kayak trip on the open ocean to the Storms River mouth and onward, passing under its photogenic suspension bridge. The upper reaches of the river gorge are explored by lilo, which are better able to navigate the shallower waters.
