Owned by the Rattray family, the property is in an ideal location for travellers who enjoy history and scenic surroundings, boasting wonderful views of the mountains and Battlefields themselves.

Accommodation is in very comfortable cottages, suitable for families or couples travelling together, and aims to create a home away from home for guests.

The history of the property and the surroundings are a pivotal part of one’s experience at Fugitives' Drift Lodge and guests are offered the chance to visit Isandlwana and Rorke’s Drift. These regions are where the Anglo-Zulu War took place in 1879, and tour guides provide a gripping tale of events.

No trip to KwaZulu-Natal would be complete without a stay at this fantastic property. The Rattray family are natural historians who are keen to share their in-depth knowledge with their guests, together with providing a fantastic stay at their beautiful property in breathtaking surroundings.

Rooms

All of the property's accommodation options are large with good amenities, spacious en suite bathrooms and private balconies offering immaculate views over the plains. Amenities include telephones, safe deposit box, hair dryers and toiletries and all are decorated in a similar style. Accommodation comprises a handful of spacious cottages, each one tastefully decorated and featuring a private veranda.

The Rattray family have ensured that the history of the region is an important part of their guests' experience and that the accommodation embraces the beautiful nature of its surroundings, with each cottage聽combining historical artefacts with modern furnishings to create a characterful, warm and inviting environment.

Location

Fugitives' Drift is located at Rorke鈥檚 Drift, within the KwaZulu-Natal province of South Africa and within a 20 square kilometre Natural Heritage Site. The property is located on the very site where clashes took place between the Zulu warriors and British soldiers, making it a poignant and fascinating place to stay and explore.

Food and drink

A huge part of the lodge's aim is to personalise each guest's experience. Food and wine selection is therefore excellent, and guests staying here are spoilt for choice. Breakfast and lunch is served in the Harford Library, which has amazing views, and on warm, clear days guests are treated to breakfast and lunch outside on the deck. Guests dine from a set menu, served in the boma or in the main house.

Families

The property has many outdoor activities for all ages, including the Battlefield Kids programme for younger guests. Families can be accommodated in the lodge's two sets of inter-leading rooms. It is worth noting that some tours and drives may not allow children under the age of 12, and younger children are not allowed in the dining room.聽

Honeymooners

The lodge creates a friendly yet private ambiance for honeymooners, and the scenic surroundings create an intimate setting to celebrate any special occasion.

Facilities and activities

A large swimming pool is available for guest use, set within the pleasant gardens. The lodge also offers complimentary Wi-Fi in all public areas, a turn down and wake up service and a number of interesting tours, which form a great part of the Fugitives' Drift experience.
