Itinerary idea in detail

Includes international flights from a choice of UK airports, including London, Birmingham, Manchester, Newcastle, Edinburgh and Glasgow.

  • Today you begin your journey by boarding your international outbound flight to Lima. Arriving in Lima, you'll be met by your private guide and assisted to your hotel for the evening.

  • This morning catch your flight to Puerto Maldonado, the gateway to the Southern Amazon. You'll be met at the airport by a representative from your lodge and board a motorised canoe with a small group of other guests. Rest and relax on arrival at the lodge, or you may start the lodge's programme of activities that evening.

  • Over the next few days explore the rainforest with your lodge guides. The exact order of activities and trips may vary. Today, for example, you might walk one of the trails around the lodge, identifying vegetation such as breadfruit trees and rubber trees. After lunch and some downtime, you could take a canoe trip on the river, looking for nocturnal wildlife at dusk.

  • This morning, you may canoe on the nearby oxbow Sandoval Lake, learning about its formation, vegetation and wildlife, which includes blue and yellow macaws and red howler monkeys. In the afternoon, walk on the Inkaterra Canopy Walkway and learn about its conservation work. In the evening, head out on a night walk to spot wildlife emerging at dusk.

  • Travel to Puerto Maldonado's airport by shared transfer and fly to Cuzco. On arrival, you'll be met and transferred to your hotel in the historic former capital of the Inca Empire. We suggest relaxing the rest of the day, perhaps taking short walks and acclimatising to the altitude.

  • This morning, your driver and guide will pick you up from your hotel for a private half-day tour of Cuzco and several nearby Inca sites. Visit a former Temple of the Sun, and head out of the city to explore ruins such as Tambo Machay, an Inca fountain, and Qenqo Temple, a huge carved monolith. You have the afternoon free — this could be spent ambling around the colonial backstreets and markets.

  • Travel by road out of Cuzco with your private guide and driver and enter the Sacred Valley of the Incas. Here, enjoy a private guided tour of key sights such as the Písac Market and terraces, and the fortress town of Ollantaytambo which offers impressive views across a mountainous valley.

  • Take the train to Machu Picchu, accompanied by your guide. This journey follows the rushing Urubamba River. You arrive at the site in the afternoon and take a private tour of the ruins with your guide. They show you the site's highlights, such as the Intihuatana Stone, known as the 'hitching post of the sun'.

  • This morning you can explore Machu Picchu again at your own leisure. You might like to walk the short trail to the nearby Inca Bridge. This afternoon, take the train from Aguas Calientes back to Cuzco, where you're met and taken to your hotel.

  • Today you will travel across the stunning countryside to Puno on the shore of Lake Titicaca. It is a long but beautiful journey across the Altiplano.

  • Spend the final full day of the trip visiting the Uros islands and the Llachon community.

  • Travel by private transfer to Juliaca Airport in time for your flight to Lima. Then connect with your international flight home.

  • Arrive home today to complete your journey.
