The Yucatán Peninsula has over 3,000 "cenotes", or water sinkholes, formed by the Yucatán's underground freshwater rivers. Caverns and caves formed where the underground water collects, creating these beautiful turquoise coloured pools either completely underground or partly open.
Cenotes were sacred to the Maya because they represented the entrance to the underworld, and many valuable artefacts and even human skeletons have been found in them.
You will head for the village of Abala, an area known for its exquisite cenotes, located 50 km south of Mérida. The first stop will be the Cenote Yaax-Ha, and after a safety induction you can swim and snorkel in its warm waters. The stalactites and stalagmites that form inside are true natural works of art.
You then visit the Cenote Kankirixche, where the sunlight filtering through holes in the ceiling gives it a magical feeling.
The approximate duration is seven hours, lunch and snorkelling equipment are included.
