Whale watching, ÃŽle Sainte-Marie, Madagascar

Whale Watching

In June, humpback whales come from the waters of the South Pole to the Ste Marie Channel, not far off the coast. The channel is protected by the East coast of Madagascar and by Sainte-Marie, ideal for whales who come to breed and calve. The whales remain close to the Ste Marie for four months — the time taken for the calves to grow up. In September the whales return to the South Pole to stuff themselves with krill. The international association of whale protection, Megaptera, is based at Princesse Bora.

On a full day whale watching trip you will leave at 0730 by boat, accompanied by the scientists. Spend the day observing the whales, and collecting data on sounds, behaviour and description. This data will later be analysed. You will return at 1730 — just in time for a sunset drink!
