Masoala Forest Lodge

Masoala Forest Lodge is a small and simple property, constructed of bamboo, palm and wood. It is built in a small clearing in the primary rainforest of Masoala, above an idyllic beach. The sand is deep yellow in colour and enormous trees hang over the beach. There are large granite boulders and when the weather is good swimming and snorkelling off the beach in the Tampolo Marine Reserve is possible. Other activities include sea kayaking, windsurfing and whale watching in season.

The camp consists of six Meru-style tents raised two metres above ground on a wooden platform, each with a thatched roof, balcony with hammock and private beach access. Inside there are two beds, a table with jug of water and solar powered lights. Bathroom facilities are private with an en suite bathroom with hot water at certain times of day.

At the centre of the clearing is a typical Malagasy longhouse, raised on a wooden platform and made of bamboo and a thatched roof. Here meals are served at a large wooden table, where guests can dine together — dinners are hearty three-course meals, making the most of local produce and seafood, freshly baked bread and daily snacks. There is also an extensive library of reference books on Masoala and a 'help-yourself' bar (limited but sufficient — please note alcohol incurs an additional charge). The owners, managers and staff are from the local communities, and although they keep mostly out of your way they will do anything to make your stay as comfortable as possible, as will your guide.
