Maison Souvannaphoum

Luang Prabang, Laos

The Maison Souvannaphoum is an elegant accommodation option in Luang Prabang, set in lush tropical gardens and situated just outside the UNESCO zone for easy exploration of the area's temples, markets and riverfront dining options.

The property has a large outdoor pool and charming, well-appointed rooms that tastefully combine Laotian and French designs, featuring classic colonial interiors, large windows with wooden shutters and Laotian textiles.

This 19th century mansion once belonged to Prince Souvanna Phouma, who was Laos' prime minister for several different terms between 1951 and 1975. Now a comfortable hotel, the building has been carefully renovated to balance colonial charm with modern conveniences and a polished service.

OUR OPINION:

We liked the regal ambience at Maison Souvannaphoum; its excellent standard of service will make you feel like royalty.

Rooms

Each of the rooms accommodates up to two guests. Rooms in the newer Garden Wing section feature balconies with garden or pool views. A number of rooms are housed in the historic La Residence Wing, which was part of the original mansion. The three suite options offer further space and luxury. These include the Champa Suite or 'Princess Room', which has a separate lounge area and a luxurious bathroom featuring scented candles, a salt scrub and tropical flower petals; the Laos Suite or 'Queen room', which overlooks the garden and pool and has a walk-in closet; and the spacious Maison Suite, where Prince Souvannaphoum himself once lived. All rooms include air conditioning, king sized or twin beds, electronic safes and free Wi-Fi access.

Location

Maison Souvannaphoum is situated right next to Luang Prabang old town in a prime location, only a five-minute walk from the river and the town's many restaurant options. A market is held each night only a short distance from the hotel. Although the entrance is on a main street, the hotel itself is set back from the road to offer a quiet stay in close proximity to many of the area's major sights. Luang Prabang International Airport is around a 15-minute drive away.

Food and drink

Guests can dine in the on site restaurant, Elephant Blanc, which offers seating in the air conditioned dining room or alfresco by the pool. It serves French, Laotian and Indo-Chinese dishes in a pleasant garden setting, with the ten course 'Feast of the Prince' tasting menu being a highlight for those wishing to try delicious local cuisine. Champagne, breakfast and other dishes are also available through room service, and the property offers an extensive drinks list that includes wines, spirits and cocktails.

Families

Some of the rooms in the Garden Wing can interconnect to accommodate families.

Facilities and activities

The hotel has a relaxing spa offering a wide range of treatments, and bicycle hire is available should you wish to explore the local area at your own pace. The front desk is staffed 24 hours a day, and there's a souvenir shop on site.
