Villa Il Poggiale

Villa Il Poggiale

Italy

With a dramatic Tuscan-style loggia dominating its façade, it's obvious that Il Poggiale was designed to impress. In the 1400s, the property was the country retreat of Florence’s noble Corsini family, before passing through various owners to become the elegant boutique accommodation it is today.

Entering the villa’s terracotta-tiled hallways, you reach the large central drawing room complete with a small honesty bar. There's a small and intimate restaurant, along with a charming white and blue breakfast room that opens onto the main terrace. Beyond is a pleasant outdoor swimming pool — open during the summer months — which benefits from beautiful views across the surrounding olive groves and vineyards.

OUR OPINION:

The staff at Il Poggiale are incredibly welcoming and friendly. While the property can feel a little like a maze, spread across a number of levels with no elevator, its historical charm and location make it a great option that's well placed for exploring the highlights of the region.

Rooms

The rooms at Il Poggiale are spread throughout the sprawling building. Top-floor rooms tend to boast the best views, looking out over the surrounding countryside or toward the small internal courtyard. All are furnished in a classic Tuscan style with terracotta floors and beautiful exposed beams. The simple en suite bathrooms are decorated with pretty tiles, and each room contains a flat-screen TV, tea and coffee making facilities and free Wi-Fi.

Location

Conveniently located around 30 minutes’ drive south of Florence and 50 minutes’ drive from Siena, Il Poggiale is in a great position for exploring Tuscany. You could choose to spend the whole day in Florence, or venture deeper into the countryside to explore some of the region’s fantastic wineries and picturesque little towns.

Food and drink

Breakfast at Il Poggiale is a simple buffet affair, consisting of cold meats and cheeses, cereal, fresh fruit and a range of cakes and pastries, as well as a small selection of hot options. During the summer months, guests can eat on the terrace overlooking the olive groves, but for the rest of the year it's served in a rather grand breakfast room with high ceilings.

Families

Some rooms can interconnect to form small family suites on request.

Facilities and activities

There's a small spa housed in the basement of the property, featuring individual treatment rooms with private saunas should you want some pampering during your stay. Outside, there's a swimming pool.
