Once a private villa, the Palazzo Murat is composed of two buildings. The older building houses a handful of picturesque rooms, while the newer build has many more. Views are either of the sea, the verdant gardens, or a partial view of the sea, town and church.
The restaurant and central courtyard bar are in the main building, which is surrounded by jasmine and lemon trees. Creeping bougainvillea wraps around the overlooking balconies and is as much a part of the hotel’s history as the stone staircases and archways. It’s no wonder this is such a popular venue for weddings from all over the world.
A real find, the Palazzo Murat is one of kind and a strong contender for our most preferred property in Positano. It’s great for exploring the town or staying put and enjoying the pool, restaurant and gardens.

Rooms
Time slows in the rooms at the Palazzo. Each room is elegant, sophisticated and classically Mediterranean. The balconies are a charming setting for breakfast in the morning sunshine, the beds are exceptionally comfortable, and the bathrooms are spacious. These are rooms you may not want to leave, except perhaps, for a dip in the pool.
Location
The Palazzo Murat is in the central pedestrian area, equidistant from the road — which ends halfway up the hill — and the beach at the bottom. You can reach any main point of interest in a five to 15-minute walk, via the stairs or street. Positano’s finest restaurants are on your doorstep, as is the church of Santa Maria Assunta, which is right next door.
Food and drink
The Al Palazzo restaurant uses fresh produce, taken from its vegetable garden, to supplement its menu and, each evening, the outdoor seating area is illuminated by candles. For cooler days, there is seating indoors, where breakfast can also be served. If you prefer a simple cocktail or glass of wine before heading out for dinner, then the lively courtyard bar is a great option.
Facilities and activities
The swimming pool, which is only open to hotel guests, is an oasis of calm. Surrounded by palm trees and citrus, it is a peaceful spot to while away the day, stretched out on the sunloungers. Or, if you prefer to go to the beach, then the hotel provides a beach kit for every guest.
