Tandjung Sari

Tandjung Sari

Sanur, Indonesia

One of Bali’s best kept secrets, Tandjung Sari has been welcoming guests for over 50 years since it opened in 1962 as Bali’s first boutique property. Located on Sanur Beach it was originally an extension to a family home and is still owned and managed by that same family.

Named after the small temple on the beachfront, the literal translation is Cape of Flowers. This small, charming hotel offers characterful accommodation set among the larger resorts of Sanur Beach with the convenience of plenty of shops, restaurants and bars on the doorstep.

The beautiful old gardens and rambling character of the pathways create an atmosphere of deep charm and tranquillity. With a variety of activities and a great location, Tandjung Sari attracts couples of all ages, as well as families.

OUR OPINION:

The resort was one of the first to be developed in the Sanur area. It is traditional and modern at the same time and ideal for those who are looking for time on the beach but who also want to have easy access to an array of restaurants, shops, bars and water sports.

Rooms

There are 26 rooms at Tandjung Sari, all equipped with air conditioning, free wireless internet access, minibar, palm leaf sunhats, sarongs, mosquito coils, outdoor areas, bathtub and shower and tea and coffee making facilities.

Location

Sanur is located on the southeast coast of Bali and is relatively peaceful compared with some of the busier, larger beach resorts in that part of the island. One of the oldest resort areas on the island it has a relaxed feel to it.

Although not as quiet and undeveloped as the more secluded beach resorts on the northern and eastern coasts of Bali, Sanur offers the advantage of a wide selection of restaurants, bars and shops. The beach is a long stretch of 4 km of white sand, and running the length of the beach a paved walkway sits between the sand and a string of restaurants and hotels. An offshore reef means the waters here are fairly calm making it a popular destination for families.

At around 30 minutes’ drive from Denpasar (Bali’s international airport), Tandjung Sari is easy to reach. Its location between the beachfront and the main street of Sanur means that it is just a short walk away from a variety of restaurant options, an array of shops and lots of water sports.

Food and drink

The open-air beachfront restaurant and bar offers a selection of Indonesian and international cuisine.

Every first and third Saturday of the month, the children of the Tandjung Sari Foundation perform a classic Balinese Legong dance, accompanied by a traditional gamelan orchestra of senior musicians, at dinner time in the restaurant.

Room service offers the same menu as the restaurant, allowing for the option of a private dinner in your bungalow, or even breakfast in your balé or on your terrace.

Breakfast and lunch boxes are also available if you have an early start or will be out for a tour, sightseeing adventure or would like to have a picnic.

Families

Although there is no kids' club at Tandjung Sari, families are welcome to stay and there are no age restrictions.

Facilities and activities

Tandjung Sari is set right on the beach where there are a variety of water sports on offer, or you can simply relax on the loungers or take a dip in the sea.

The Tandjung Sari Foundation dancers get together near the poolside every Friday and Sunday from 3.00pm to 4.30pm, and guests are welcome to come along and watch the children practise. For years, the hotel has been nurturing the artistic talents of local children to ensure that the classical Balinese dances are preserved within the community. During performances, the dances are joined by a live gamelan orchestra for all to enjoy.

From May to November the Friday and Saturday night market gives an extra buzz to Sanur. Experience the atmosphere of a traditional Indonesian market with specialist food vendors along the beach.

Local excursions

Sanur’s beachfront cycle path stretches 5 km and a cycle ride or evening stroll along it is a pleasant way to explore.

Sanur is a good centre for water sports with a variety of equipment from jet skis to kayaks available to hire on the beach.

There is also a range of boat trips that can be arranged locally and Sanur is well placed for trips inland to Ubud or further into the interior.

Diving

Although the hotel does not have its own dive centre, along Sanur’s main road are many PADI dive centres which can organise diving and snorkelling trips to nearby sites. There is easy access to the east coast of Bali, as well as Nusa Penida, allowing exploration of some amazing sites including Manta Point and Crystal Bay, where you may be lucky enough to spot the ocean sunfish (mola mola) between July and October.

Spa Facilities

There are no spa facilities at the hotel.
