L'Oustau de Baumanière, Provence

Baumanière Les Baux-de-Provence

Les-Baux-de-Provence, France

Situated next to the village of Les-Baux-de-Provence in the foothills of the Alpilles mountain range, Baumanière Les Baux-de-Provence offers stylish, traditional rooms and commanding views of the surrounding countryside. The hotel is made up of a collection of buildings constructed on a rocky plateau, site of a former village that was largely destroyed in World War II. Now the expertly maintained grounds are dotted with fig and olive trees, botanical gardens and a pond with swans.

Rooms are traditional in style with wood-beamed ceilings, terracotta tiled floors and antique furniture but with modern touches such as air conditioning and Wi-Fi. The restaurant, L’Oustau de Baumanière, boasts two Michelin stars and one of the largest wine cellars in Europe. During your stay, you can meander through the cobbled streets of Les-Baux-de-Provence, which is only a five-minute walk away, or you can choose to travel to nearby Avignon, which is about a 40-minute drive.

OUR OPINION:

A Provence institution, Baumanière Les Baux-de-Provence is primarily renowned for its exquisite restaurant but the elegant rooms are equally memorable. Service is flawless and the swimming pool and facilities make this a truly spectacular retreat.

Rooms

Rooms at Baumanière Les Baux-de-Provence are scattered across five different stand-alone buildings and no two rooms here are the same. Varying from classic to contemporary, the stylishly appointed rooms feature antiques, terracotta tile floors, wooden furnishings and paintings of local scenes. Some of the Luxe category rooms also boast private terraces, allowing you to take in the Provençal landscape from the privacy of your own room. Modern conveniences such as Wi-Fi and air conditioning come standard here.

Location

Baumanière Les Baux-de-Provence is situated just below the Les-Baux-de-Provence village in the foothills of the Alpilles mountain range. From here, it’s a five-minute walk to the village itself where you can wander through the winding cobbled streets dotted with a variety of restaurants and shops housed in medieval stone buildings. You can also travel to Avignon which is about 40 minutes away. Nearby, you'll also find Les Carrières de Lumières, a Roman-era stone quarry that's been turned into a unique art installation — famous paintings are projected inside every corner of the cave-like galleries.

Food and drink

Baumanière Les Baux-de-Provence is perhaps best known for its restaurant, L’Oustau de Baumanière, which boasts two Michelin-stars and has hosted the Queen of England. Classic French dishes with a modern twist are served here for both lunch and dinner, either indoors in the vaulted wine cellar or outdoors on the shady terrace among the mulberry trees. A second restaurant, Le Cabro d’Or, serves more informal regional dishes.

Facilities and activities

During your stay you can make use of a heated swimming pool surrounded by gardens and olive trees, a gym, tennis court and an area for playing the traditional French game of pétanque (boules). The hotel also has their own wine label and a large wine cellar that offers tastings.
