Rano Kau, Easter Island

Orongo and Rano Kau

Rano Kau, Easter Island

This half day excursion will take you to visit the extinct volcano, Rano Kau. One of its fascinating characteristics is the spectacular view of the crater lake, with its 800 m surface diameter making it the largest reservoir of freshwater on the island. You also stop at a viewpoint where you can enjoy breathtaking views over the whole island and the Pacific Ocean.

Afterwards you will visit the ceremonial village of Orongo. From here you can look out to the three little islands off the coast: Motu Nui, Motu Iti and Motu Kao Kao, where the historic Birdman competition took place; the heroic quest for the egg and the island's kingship. Here you will also see the petroglyphs, some of which are more distinctive than others after years of weather erosion.

Finally you will leave Rano Kau and head back toward Hanga Roa, visiting the unrestored Ahu Vinapu, an altar built with blocks of basalt weighing up to two tons, cut and assembled with such precision that it reminds one of pre-Inca architecture. You will then return to your hotel.
