Spirit Bear Lodge

Spirit Bear Lodge

Canada

Owned by the Kitasoo/Xai’xais First Nation, Spirit Bear Lodge is a comfortable base from which to explore the Kitasoo Spirit Bear Conservancy and the culture of the people who have lived here for hundreds of years.

Based on a traditional long house, the hub of the lodge is the great room. Here you’ll share communal meals around two long cedar tables and swap experiences from your days with the other guests. Twelve comfortable bedrooms situated over two floors extend from here. All rooms overlook the water so keep your eyes peeled for the humpbacks and orca that regularly swim up this quieter strait.

OUR OPINION:

We find that this peaceful lodge is one of those places that always stays with you. Spending days out on the water searching for marine life, grizzlies and the illusive spirit bear is a hard-to-beat experience.

OUR RATING: Simple

Excellent

Rooms

Each room is simple and clean with white walls, pine furniture and large windows to make the most of the lake views. First Nations artwork hangs on the walls throughout. King sized beds take up most of the space with a comfortable sofa and wardrobe space to store your belongings. En suite bathrooms have all the amenities including eco-toiletries from a local company.聽

Location

The lodge is situated in the small town of Klemtu, on the east coast of Swindle Island, overlooking a narrow strait. A very small community, the town does have a grocery store but little else, all your meals will be in the lodge itself and activities will be in the surrounding rainforest. Forest covered hills rise up behind the village and across the water is Cone Island, a long stretch of pristine forest.聽

Food and drink

A buffet breakfast is served each morning in the great room, with a selection of pastries and fruit as well as hot, freshly-cooked dishes. Lunches are prepared and packed up for you to take with you for the day. Sandwiches, wraps, juices, nuts and snacks are provided, and you can take as much or as little as you like. In the evening, canap茅s are served before a two-course buffet dinner. House wine and beer is available with your meal.聽

Facilities and activities

There are a wide range of tours and activities available, exploring the rich cultural and natural history of British Columbia鈥檚 wild coast. Most tours start from the lodge鈥檚 jetty, journeying by motorboat along the surrounding waterways, stopping to explore the Great Bear Rainforest. You can visit Princess Royal Island, home to the Kitasoo Spirit Bear Conservancy where you might spot spirit bears, black bears, grizzly bears, wolves and Sitka deer. The guides come from the local Kitasoo/Xai鈥檟ais community who can explain the history of their land as you explore.
