The Lovat

Loch Ness, The UK

Situated in the small but thriving town of Fort Augustus at the southern end of Loch Ness, The Lovat is great place to base yourself to explore the surrounding area. There is a surprising amount of space for a property with a small number of rooms, and public areas are large yet welcoming, with fireplaces, magazines and a DVD and games library. Guest rooms vary in layout, but many have attractive views toward the loch and the surrounding forested hillsides. Dining here is excellent, the award-winning Station Road Restaurant sources ingredients from its immediate surroundings and brings you unique tastes of the Highlands.

OUR OPINION:

This is a good-value, welcoming place to spend time while exploring around Loch Ness.

Rooms

There are a number of room sizes at The Lovat but we only recommend staying in the higher room categories due to space limitations. Decor is fairly simple and traditional but rooms are well-maintained and comfortable. Grand master rooms each have a small living area within a large bay window, overlooking the forest-covered hillsides which surround Loch Ness. All rooms feature flat-screen TVs and complimentary Wi-Fi and either a bath or shower or both.

Location

Fort Augustus sits at the southern end of Loch Ness, in the middle of the Great Glen ancient fault line which divides Scotland diagonally between Inverness and Fort William. The Lovat is just under an hour from each of these settlements. Fort Augustus itself is a small but thriving town with a number of shops, cafés and restaurants.

Food and drink

The hotel has two restaurants from which to choose. Station Road Restaurant offers award-winning dining, with a seasonal five-course taster menu featuring local Scottish produce. This is set within an attractive oak-paneled room with views toward the hills. The Brasserie has an à la carte menu but this is a more informal option, whose dishes again focuses on local Scottish ingredients.
