Scandia House

Petersburg, The US

Set in a thriving fishing village with a strong Norwegian heritage, Scandia House is a simple Alaskan hotel with a friendly ambience and a convenient location. It sits in the heart of downtown Petersburg on the north end of Mitkof Island and can only be reached by air or ferry.

Like most buildings in the town, the hotel has a loosely-Nordic design but inside is quite traditional with local artwork displayed in the lobby and simple, homely decor. There are 33 comfortable guest rooms ranging from spacious singles to large suites with Jacuzzi baths and kitchenettes. All have deep green carpets and dark, floral bedspreads, a seating area and cable TV. Internet access is available for an additional fee.

A complimentary continental breakfast is served each morning in the dining area overlooking the waterfront with freshly-baked muffins, tea, coffee and juices. Staff can advise on local walks or activities and can arrange fishing licenses. Guests also get courtesy transfers to the ferry and airport if required.

Petersburg is set against a backdrop of snow-capped mountains and glaciers and humpback whales and orcas are frequently seen in nearby Frederick Sound in July and August, while the LeConte Glacier calves regularly.

OUR OPINION:

This is a very simple property that offers a convenient place from which to explore Petersburg and the Tongass National Forest.

Rooms

The 33 rooms vary greatly in size from small singles to large suites, although the decor in all is simple and traditional. Deep green carpets and floral bedspreads in dark shades combine with warm woods to give a homely, old-school atmosphere. Some rooms offer sweeping views of the waterfront and mountains, others have kitchenettes, Jacuzzi tubs, or sofa beds for additional guests. All have a table and seating area, cable TV and internet access is available for an additional charge.

Location

Petersburg is an isolated fishing community located on Frederick Sound on the north end of Mitkof Island. It is about halfway between Juneau and Ketchikan on the Inside Passage in a highly scenic area with a fjord-like setting and backdrop of snow-capped mountains and glaciers. Petersburg is only accessible by water or air on a half-hour flight from Juneau or by ferry from Wrangell, a journey of three hours.

Food and drink

The hotel does not have a restaurant but it is only a five-minute walk from a choice of dining options in the town. Many local restaurants have a menu that reflects Petersburg's strong fishing heritage with local salmon, halibut, cod, crab, and prawns featuring prominently. The hotel serves a complimentary continental breakfast each morning with freshly-baked muffins, tea, coffee and juices among the options on offer.

Families

Children under 12 stay free at Scandia House. The larger suites have sofa beds to accommodate additional guests and kitchenettes so you can prepare basic meals.

Facilities and activities

Staff at the hotel can help to arrange fishing licenses, boat trips to see the humpback whales and orcas in Frederick Sound or the frequently-calving LeConte Glacier nearby. If you would like to explore the island by car, vehicle rental can be arranged or you could take a short boat ride to Kupreanof Island to hike the Petersburg Mountain Trail for panoramic views of Petersburg and the surrounding glaciers.

Accessibility

Scandia House has some wheelchair accessible rooms with roll-in shower facility.
