La Fontaine Guest House

La Fontaine Guest House

Franschhoek, South Africa

La Fontaine is a charming, family-run guesthouse with a personal touch. From the outside it's recognizable by its whitewashed walls and green shutters.

The main house contains the lounge, which features a large fireplace which is lit in the winter months and is an excellent spot to enjoy a glass of sherry before heading out for dinner. The breakfast room is also in the main house, with the French doors opening to a lovely courtyard area.

There's also a good-sized swimming pool set in the landscaped gardens with beautiful mountain views.

OUR OPINION:

While the guesthouse may lack some of the refinement that others in the area have, it is full of character and the location is one of the best in Franschhoek, making it great value for money.

Rooms

There are six rooms in the main house, each of which is cool and airy, with high ceilings and wooden floors. Superior rooms are the larger option, and you can request one with a balcony. There are four additional rooms set within the gardens, by the pool or by the courtyard. These Garden rooms are spacious, featuring a patio or garden access that allows you to soak up the sun while enjoying a glass of local wine. They also boast cozy fireplaces for those cooler evenings. There is a Family Suite, but children aged under 12 are on a request basis only.

Further accommodation can be requested at Campbell House, an adjoining late 19th century home, ideal for small groups. All rooms are comfortably appointed with en suite bathrooms and air conditioning.

Location

The guesthouse is positioned beautifully in central Franschhoek. With the main street just around the corner, and many of the best restaurants within strolling distance, guests will find that they rarely need to organize transport during their stay. Another Franschhoek highlight, the wine tram, begins from Franschhoek Square, and the short walk to the square means that you can enjoy the trip without worrying about the drive home afterwards.

Food and drink

Breakfasts are served in the pretty courtyard area, beneath a trellis covered in vines or in the dining room. Guests can help themselves to the buffet selection, as well as an à la carte, hot option cooked to order. For lunch and dinner the team are only too happy to advise on and reserve Franschhoek’s fine restaurants on your behalf.

Families

Children are welcome and accommodated in the spacious Family Suites.

Facilities and activities

Guests can make use of La Fontaine's swimming pool. The hotel also has secure parking and benefits from a courtesy room in the case of early arrivals or late departures. For guests who are looking for an active vacation, the team at La Fontaine will be happy to assist in arranging activities such as horse riding, fly-fishing, golfing and cycling.
