Mrauk U, which straddles the Aungdat Chang River, has the feel of a lost city. It's an archaeological site of vastly underestimated importance and also an area of great natural beauty set amidst rolling hills.

The heavy rain during the monsoon makes this region a haven for fruit growing and there are many verdant rice terraces dotted around the area. The farmers will smile at you as they work in the fields with some of the weirdest and wonderful temples in Southeast Asia as their backdrop.

Mrauk U is a fascinating destination but the tourist infrastructure in this part of the country is generally of a much lower standard than other, more popular areas in Myanmar. Vehicles and guides are arranged through hotels in the region so it is harder to have direct control over their quality. We do our utmost to secure the best vehicles and guides available in the region but the standard is noticeably different to other parts of the country.

There are currently no air-conditioned cars in Mrauk U and the English comprehension and pronunciation of some of the guides is not as good as we would like it to be. However, they do have good local knowledge. If you have any concerns we can arrange for a guide from the bigger cities to accompany you for this section of the trip.
