Espíritu Santo

Isla Espíritu Santo Tour

You will be picked up from your hotel at a prearranged time and driven to the port for your small motorized-boat trip. The island of Espíritu Santo is the closest island to the bay of La Paz and possesses the most stunning views of all the islands in the Sea of Cortez.

Its contrasting desert landscapes, red and black volcanic cliffs and turquoise blue sea are a breathtaking example of the sweeping vistas found here. Travelers from all over the world visit Espíritu Santo's coves and canyons to camp, snorkel, kayak, scuba dive or simply relax on its many beautiful beaches. Wildlife is abundant in the waters around here — you might be lucky to spot young manta rays leaping out of the water, sea lions frolicking, fish on the water's surface, porpoises or even whales during December to March, and several species of birds, the magnificent frigatebird, blue-footed boobies, pelicans, vultures and oystercatchers. This area can be compared to the Galapagos in the types of species found.

During this excursion you will have the opportunity to admire Ensenada de Pescadores, a peaceful beach with some fishermen inhabiting a small dwelling set apart from the beach with their own sheltered slipway. You will also pass by Playa Partida which is actually two sand spits in a "gap" between the two parts of the island. The huge crater walls that surround this area and the vast expanse of shallow water provide a spectacular view. You can easily imagine how Partida and Espíritu Santo were one landmass before the volcanic crater was breached by the sea. It is possible to negotiate the channel in vessels that do not draw more than one foot of water.

The box lunch will be served at Candelero, considered by many the most attractive bay on the island. It has two stunning beaches with a spectacular ridge splitting the bay in half with several detached islets and a larger island in the middle of the bay. You will also take a short hike up the northern arroyo during your time on the island. Here you might be lucky and spot a ring-tailed cat eating wild figs. You will also have time to swim with sea lions at the colony in Los Islotes. This is an incredible experience as they are very inquisitive. On your return to La Paz you will be driven to your hotel.

Please note this can be a choppy and bumpy ride as the boats are small, especially if it is windy.
