Geejam

Port Antonio, Jamaica

The imposing blue mountains hide this nature-inspired hotel in thick tropical jungle. Geejam is a private oasis for those wanting to a true retreat, where the water is warm, the sun shines and the sounds of tropical birds echo through the trees.

The hotel feels off the grid, yet is easily accessible.

OUR OPINION:

Geejam is a music lover's paradise, with the suites decorated with musical paraphernalia from across the ages and an onsite recording studio. The hotel offers low-key luxury for couples with intimate guest studios and access to a private beach.

Rooms

There are 12 Rumba studios, paying homage to the nature of Jamaica, with a seamless blend of white walls and wooden accents to marry the natural world to the modern. Rooms are ground or first floor and have either jungle or ocean views. Spacious en suite bathrooms come complete with rainfall showers, freestanding bathtubs and double sinks. All guest rooms have king-sized beds, pull-out sofas, TVs, air conditioning, mini fridges, Wi-Fi, and modern amenities.

Individually designed guest cabins are named after Jamaican music genres and are furnished with dark tiles, white walls and wooden furnishings. Fold-out windows over the deep bathtub create an outdoor bathing experience and a Jacuzzi sits on a wooden terrace with panoramic views over the ocean. Two of the cabins are perched high in the canopy and have views out to the jungle and ocean.

For the ultimate hideaway paradise there are three individually designed luxurious private villas, with contemporary artworks and an homage to a Jamaican music genre in the decor. They boast three or six large bedrooms, a huge private pool and outdoor decking, complete with sun loungers. These villas are perfect to enjoy a family or larger group vacation.

Location

Geejam is situated on the northeast coast of Jamaica, right on Cocoa Walk Bay, with a 15-minute walk down to Frenchman's Cove Beach, and a 15-minute drive to the closest main town Port Antonio. The resort is a three-hour drive from the international airport at Kingston.

Food and drink

At Blush Bar, you can enjoy dinner with a backdrop of tranquil music, while sipping on a cocktail. In the hotel's restaurant, chef Wallace rustles up traditional Jamaican dishes with inspiration from his grandmother’s kitchen. Dining is an alfresco affair on the terrace with à la carte, set menus and vegan options available.

Facilities and activities

The Bush Bar has an infinity pool, but the best place to swim is down on the private beach, set just steps from the hotel where you can swim, snorkel, kayak or paddleboard on the clear warm ocean. There are beachfront cabanas and deckchairs to relax in. There's also a gym nestled in the jungle, with private trainers available.

Local excursions

The pristine natural beauty on this side of the island makes it a great base to explore. Head to Frenchman’s Cove Beach for arguably the best beach on the island, where freshwater meets saltwater. The Blue Lagoon is ideal for a picnic and refreshing dip, and Reach Falls makes for a great hiking spot to see the crystal clear rock pools and lush rainforest.
