Il Falconiere, Cortona

Il Falconiere

Italy

Il Falconiere began as a restaurant; a wonderful place to eat with fantastic wines and views of the beautiful hill towns of Cortona and Montepulciano. Soon, guests were asking to spend the night, so owners, Ricardo and Silvia Baracchi, decided to restore the adjoining 17th-century villa, where Ricardo was born.

The property has now been part of the prestigious Relais & Chateaux collection since 1997 and has a renowned wine label, a Michelin-starred restaurant and a sumptuous spa.

OUR OPINION:

We particularly like Il Falconiere for its ability to offer a rustic and authentic Tuscan experience without scrimping on luxury. The service here is excellent and the views are magnificent.

Rooms

Each room and suite has its own shape and size, such is the historic nature of the buildings. They are decorated in the traditional Tuscan style with wooden shutters that open onto spectacular Italian vistas. You’ll find large, comfortable beds with soft, luxurious linens, wooden-beamed ceilings, rustic oak furniture and simple, yet tasteful, paintings on the walls. A number of the rooms have four-poster beds, while the Classic rooms offer either a bathtub or walk-in shower, depending on preference. The Deluxe and Junior suites all offer spa baths, while the three exclusive Suites have a separate walk-in shower. The Suites also have their own private garden access and sun deck.

Location

Cortona, the nearest town, is only a ten-minute drive or half-hour walk away and is a wonderful place to stop for lunch or explore in the early evening. Also in close proximity is the hilltop town of Montepulciano, while a bit further on are Arezzo, Siena and Florence. There are also well-signposted hiking routes on paths from Lake Trasimeno all the way into the adjoining province of Umbria.

Food and drink

La Limonaia is a Michelin-starred restaurant with a sommelier and a wine list to accompany each excellent dish. There is even a still and sparkling water menu so you can select the perfect bubble intensity to match your course. A buffet breakfast is served in the upstairs restaurant, which is composed of just a few small rooms.

Facilities and activities

The furthest annexed building, down a gravel road through the vineyard and olive grove, is the enchanting little cooking school. Here, there's an array of different lessons on offer, from pecorino cheese making to fresh pasta courses, as well as some from the chef’s own cookbook, 'Passions of Red'. Wine tasting, grape pressing and olive harvesting are available in season. Alternatively, feel free to relax in the excellent spa or by the swimming pool.
