Mas de Chastelas, French Riviera

Mas de Chastelas

Saint-Tropez, France

Originally built in the 18th century and converted into a hotel in the 1960s, Mas de Chastelas still maintains its feeling of being an authentic family home. The terracotta rooftops and the creeping vines that cover the building reflect a classically Provençal style that once drew Hollywood stars after the annual film festival in Cannes. Today, the hotel promotes a more tranquil atmosphere and though it enjoys a secluded location in Gassin, the vibrant streets of Saint-Tropez and the soft sands of Pampelonne Beach are both easily reached by hotel shuttle.

Mas de Chastelas’s rooms are divided among three buildings: Bastide, Villa Paladiene and Villa Toscane. The rooms have tall windows that allow copious amounts of natural light to fill the spaces and most have a classically French style and are furnished with antiques, though some are more contemporary in style. Beyond the rooms guests will find extensive gardens and a marble pool, with tables and chairs nearby to enjoy a poolside apéritif, lunch or dinner.

OUR OPINION:

The typical Provençal building with its creeping vines and ocher walls instantly reminds you of the beauties of this region. Its charms, when paired with a tranquil swimming pool and close proximity to Saint-Tropez and the beaches, make this an ideal spot in which to relax and explore.

Rooms

Rooms are divided between three buildings all with tall windows that bathe the interior spaces in light illuminating the fresh white, classically elegant decor. Antique or reproduction furniture give a typically French flair while the rooms in the Villa Toscane have a more contemporary character. Windows look out over the garden, pool or the front of the estate, while some higher room categories offer private terraces or balconies. All rooms provide air conditioning, free Wi-Fi, minibar and TV.

Location

The hotel strikes an enviable balance in location, far enough away from the hustle and bustle of Saint-Tropez to maintain easy peace and quiet, yet close enough that the glamorous town can be accessed easily for a day of exploring or lying on the beach.

Food and drink

The hotel restaurant’s menu is evocative of classic Provençal cuisine, focusing on fresh fish and citrus. In addition to its indulgent menu, there is an extensive wine list featuring wine and Champagne from all over France with the vast majority of wines on offer coming from Gassin or the local town of Ramatuelle.

Facilities and activities

The hotel has its own putting green and offers the opportunity for guests to book a private golf lesson. In addition to the putting green, guests may make use of the private tennis courts or the marble swimming pool. The hotel also offers a shuttle between the hotel and nearby Saint-Tropez or Pampelonne for a day out on the town or by the beach.
