The delightful historic settlement of Old Salem draws visitors to North Carolina with its beautifully restored buildings and costumed guides.

Moravian settlers fleeing religious persecution in Eastern Europe arrived here in the mid 18th century and established trading links with the frontier settlers who founded the town of Salem.

Neighboring Winston accrued vast wealth from tobacco and in 1913 the two communities merged to form Winston-Salem. Visitors can explore the many restored buildings of Old Salem and, with the help of costumed guides, learn about the skills, trades and customs of the Moravians.

Highlights include St. Philip's Moravian Church, the Single Brothers' House, the Museum of Early Southern Decorative Arts, the Toy Museum and the Reynolda House Museum of American Art, which is housed in a beautiful mansion set in lush gardens.
